The University of Goma Launches Its Ecological Brigade to Strengthen Environmental Commitment
As part of its commitment to environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable development, the University of Goma (UNIGOM), in collaboration with its partner ALLEN +, officially launched the Student Ecological Brigade on Friday, February 6, 2026.
This initiative is in line with UNIGOM's desire to actively contribute to the fight against the climate challenges facing the Democratic Republic of Congo by encouraging the responsible involvement of university youth. Through this new structure, the university aims to strengthen environmental actions both within its campuses and in the surrounding communities.
Speaking on this occasion, the deputy spokesperson for the students of the University of Goma, David Shema, praised this initiative which he believes marks a significant advancement in mobilizing students around environmental issues. He emphasized that the climate issue is now a global reality that requires the commitment of all, particularly the youth.
He reminded that environmental degradation is one of the major causes of several disasters observed around the world, including the recurring floods recorded in certain regions of the country. He therefore encouraged students to fully embrace this ecological dynamic and to actively engage in the actions that will be carried out on the ground.
The Ecological Brigade aims to be a framework for mobilization, awareness, and environmental education. It brings together students from different fields and will have as its main mission to promote responsible practices, raise awareness within the university community, and contribute to the implementation of concrete initiatives for environmental protection.
It is true that through this action, the University of Goma plays its role as a civic institution committed to training a youth aware of societal issues and capable of providing sustainable solutions to contemporary challenges.
