Urban Agriculture: The Ecological Brigade of UNIGOM Alongside the Communities of Lac Vert

Committed students from the Ecological Brigade of the University of Goma participated on Saturday, May 9, 2025, in a technical support activity for urban agriculture in the Lac Vert neighborhood of Goma.

Carried out in collaboration with AgroBoucle, Aid Life Learn Environment, and VIFEDE RDC, this initiative aimed to assist residents in implementing sustainable agricultural practices adapted to the urban context.

Through this community activity, the students provided technical support on the various arrangements for bag cultivation as well as guidance for sustainable production in this part of the city. The discussions mainly focused on urban cultivation techniques, which promote better use of limited spaces and the valorization of local resources.

Urban agriculture today represents an important response to the challenges of food security in the city of Goma. It notably contributes to the production of certain food items such as tomatoes, peppers, cabbages, and chilies, while also participating in the valorization of household waste, the creation of green spaces, and the improvement of household economies.

Through the commitment of the Ecological Brigade, the University of Goma continues its mission of community service by encouraging student involvement in environmental and social initiatives that address local realities.

The Ecological Brigade is thus committed to supporting communities and collaborating with other organizations to contribute to the fight against food insecurity and the promotion of a sustainable environment.
