Some names transcend generations and end up embodying much more than a career. They become landmarks, symbols, sources of inspiration. Professor Emeritus Jean-Baptiste Sakatolo Kakoma Zambèze undeniably belongs to that rare category of intellectuals whose journey has mirrored, for over half a century, the history of higher education and scientific research in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Born with an insatiable thirst for knowledge and driven early on by the desire to understand the mechanisms of life, he undertakes an academic journey of remarkable density. His university adventure begins at Lovanium University in Kinshasa, where he obtains a degree in medical and natural sciences in 1971. He then continues his medical studies and earns, in 1975, the title of Doctor of Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics; before specializing in gynecology-obstetrics in Kisangani. His academic excellence subsequently leads him to Belgium, where he simultaneously obtains a doctorate in public health, specializing in epidemiology and preventive medicine, from the Catholic University of Leuven, as well as the Aggregation of Higher Education in Medicine from the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp.

This ongoing quest for excellence is not merely an accumulation of prestigious degrees. It reveals above all a personality deeply committed to scientific rigor, the improvement of knowledge, and the training of future generations.

For several decades, Professor Kakoma has established himself as one of the great figures of Congolese university medicine. His area of expertise covers gynecology-obstetrics, public health, epidemiology, preventive medicine, parasitology, demography, and the methodology of scientific research. This intellectual versatility has allowed him to approach health issues with a holistic vision, combining clinical practice, fundamental research, and development challenges.

But to reduce Jean-Baptiste Kakoma Sakatolo Zambèze to his qualifications alone would be to miss the essence. For his most enduring work remains undoubtedly the transmission of knowledge. For nearly half a century, he has participated in the training of thousands of health professionals: doctors, nurses, midwives, specialists, and researchers. Many of his former students now hold strategic positions within universities, health institutions, and public administrations in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A builder of institutions, he has contributed to the creation and development of several universities and university extensions throughout the DRC, including the universities of Likasi, Kolwezi, Kamina, Mbuji-Mayi, Kananga, Kalemie, Kindu, and Kasumbalesa. He is also recognized as the initiator of the Doctoral School in the DRC.

One of the striking characteristics of his journey lies in his ability to engage science and society in dialogue. His research has focused on major issues affecting African populations: maternal and child health, malaria, infectious diseases, hypertension, diabetes, gynecological cancers, reproductive health, sexual violence, health systems, and universal health coverage. His scientific perspective has always been nourished by the realities experienced on the ground, with particular attention to public health challenges in resource-limited contexts.

As an author or co-author of more than a hundred national and international scientific publications, he has contributed to enriching African and global medical literature. His works, published in leading journals, testify to exceptional intellectual productivity and a constant commitment to knowledge production. This abundant scientific activity has earned him recognition that far exceeds national borders.

His academic influence has also opened the doors to several learned societies and prestigious scientific organizations. A member of societies in gynecology-obstetrics, surgery, parasitology, and tropical medicine, he has also been associated with various international platforms for reflection and research. This recognition reflects the respect that the scientific community has for him due to the quality of his work and his contribution to the development of medical sciences.

Beyond being a researcher and educator, Professor Kakoma appears as a man deeply committed to disseminating knowledge to the general public. This desire for scientific popularization was notably expressed when he directed the health editions of a Christian community radio station in Lubumbashi. An experience revealing a strong conviction: knowledge has value only when it is shared and put to the service of the community.

The title of Professor Emeritus awarded to him is one of the highest academic distinctions that a university can bestow. It rewards not only an exceptional career but also a lifetime dedicated to teaching, research, and mentoring youth.

Today, as he is called to assume new responsibilities at the head of the University of Goma, Jean-Baptiste Kakoma Sakatolo Zambèze embodies the meeting of experience, wisdom, and academic excellence. His journey demonstrates that a university is not built solely through its infrastructure or programs, but above all through women and men capable of transmitting a vision, cultivating excellence, and preparing for the future.
