The University of Goma is a public university institution. It was born from the policy of swarming higher and university education establishments advocated by the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It draws its existence and operation from Ministerial Decrees No. ESU/CABMIN/066/93 of 06/17/1993 creating University Centers including that of North Kivu in Goma, No. ESU/227/1996 of 12/18/1996 and No. ESU/002/1997 of 10/04/1997 which open university extensions in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The North Kivu University Center operated under the supervision of the University of Kisangani and finally by Order No. 055/MINSU/RS/2005 of 10/05/2005 granting autonomy to an extension of a Public Higher and University Education Establishment called "University of Goma", UNIGOM for short.
